Index to abstracts of alien depositions of intent to become U.S. citizens, 1825-1906.

This series consists of indexes to abstracts of alien depositions (series A1870) made by the Secretary of State's office from the original, signed depositions (series A1869). Volume 1, 1825-1849, consists of two separate indexes. The first index is strictly chronological and contains the date of deposition, a sequential deposition number, and the deponent's name. The later half of the volume indexes deponents alphabetically by surname and provides page numbers for volumes of the abstracts of alien depositions. Volume 2, 1825-1866, and Volume 3, 1866-1906, are cumulative by volume number, then alphabetical by surname.

Early commissions were recorded by the secretary of the Colony of New York. Chapter 12 of the Laws of 1778 appointed the secretary of state the clerk of the Council of Appointment. The 1821 state constitution abolished the council, and its powers were transferred to the governor.
